Young Authors Publish ‘Thoughts of Home’ through Scholastic PDF Print E-mail
Fourth grade students at BwCCS became published authors recently though their participation in the "Writers of Tomorrow" program, sponsored by Scholastic and the non-profit PENCIL.

As part of the yearlong project, students in Mr. Buonamia and Mr. Yung’s class attended monthly workshops at Scholastic's offices to learn about the publishing industry. Lesson plans and activities were designed to match the students’ English Language Arts curriculum.

Their published book, “Thoughts of Home,” is a collection of memoir pieces focusing on the concept of home, from play fighting with dad to fun sleepovers. The students developed their story ideas, created a sales pitch, drafted a manuscript, provided illustrations and priced the book with help from Scholastic.

“In addition to the thrill of participating in this exciting project, students not only learned about the technical and collaborative work it takes to publish a book, they now have a greater appreciation for the stories they carry within themselves,” said Mr. Buonamia.

The Writers of Tomorrow was featured in the School Library Journal on May 26. To read the article, click here.
