High School-Aged Alumni

 

9th and 10th grades (spring term): group discussions on social emotional (age appropriate) gender-related issues; life skills workshops such as time management, organizational skills, and study techniques

11th grade (fall term): college preparatory curriculum- including workshops on public speaking, college culture, college and career exploration, introduction to financial aid, and a life skills curriculum similar to the one for 9th and 10th grade students.

12th grade (fall and winter terms): hands-on college application assistance, financial aid and scholarship search information sessions, essay writing support, one-on-one meetings with college admissions representatives, and career assessment workshops, including an annual career panel with Junior Board members (open to 11th grade students as well)

SAT Prep Course (winter and spring terms): open to 11th grade students by admission only. Course is open to 15 students and is a 12-week intensive course taught by The Princeton Review (verbal) and Tutor Associates (math). Classes occur on Saturdays and are 3 hours long. 2 diagnostic exams are administered and individualized assessments are provided.

Professional Training Program (spring term): interactive workshops open to 10th , 11th , 12th grade students by admission only. Upon successful completion, participants become summer interns. Topics include: workplace etiquette, MS Office Suite, financial literacy, resume writing, and interview skills. This program also includes one worksite tour, often hosted by a member of the Junior Board

Summer Internship Program (summer term): Open to participants of Professional Training Program upon successful completion, in addition to 10 college students. Interns work at NYC's top companies, educational institutions and non-profits such as Philips Nizer, LLP (law firm); Brooklyn Children's Museum; Beth Israel Medical Center; READ Foundation; Prospect Park Zoo; and Arcos Communications (marketing agency)

Mentoring Program (year-round): Open to 25 11th and 12th grade students who need assistance with the college research, preparation, and application processes. Students are paired with a Junior Board member or an affiliate of the Junior Board. Mentors follow curriculum that generally complements 11th and 12th grade fall workshops described above. Mentor-mentee matches last one year and may be renewed after the 11th grade year.

College Tours (one per quarter): day torus are generally within the 5 NYC boroughs. Overnight tours (2 nights, 3 days) are usually in the Northeast. In the past, we have visited Poughkeepsie, NY; Boston, MA; and Washington, DC . We visit a range of schools from CUNY and SUNY to large out-of-state schools and Ivy League universities

Reunions (one per season): Annual Holiday Party-December; Annual Reunion-June; Freshman Reunion-Late August/ September

Outreach (year round): I reach out to current 8 th grade at BwCCS so that they can familiarize themselves with the Alumni Program's mission. Also, the Alumni Program staff   recruits volunteers for Career Day and College Day at BwCCS Middle School so that the younger students (6th and 7th grades) understand the long-term importance of higher education and career exploration

Collaboration with schools and organizations (year round): the Alumni Program partners with organizations such as READ Foundation, The Door, and Brooklyn Children's Museum. In addition to partner organizations, the Alumni Program collaborates with guidance counselors and college counselors of the high schools our alumni attend.
